Imagine discovering an unknown Soulwax remix by accident?!
It happened to me in 2010.
Memories are a bit hazy, but I think I found out about this remix after I got some info from someone who was leaving Play It Again Sam, Soulwax’ record label at the time. He emailed me stuff from his archive, like old press releases and stuff. Amongst those documents was a list of all Soulwax remixes.
Much to my surprise, I saw “Moderatto – Marchate Ya! (Soulwax Remix)” listed – a remix of a track from a band I had never heard of.
I quickly found the link between this glamrock parody band and the brothers from Ghent: Moderatto’s lead singer was Jay De La Cueva, who used to play in Titan. Dave and Steph played this Mexican band regularly on their tv show @lter8. Titan had remixed the Soulwax song “Too Many DJ’s” in 2000, but it was never released.

A year later, in 2001, Moderatto released its debut album “Resurrexion”, which included the track “Marchate Ya!”.
At that time, Dave and Steph had already released a couple of Soulwax remixes, but they were still cutting their teeth at making remixes.
I found an mp3 of the Soulwax remix of “Marchate Ya!” on the Moderatto website. That was a lucky shot; again, you couldn’t find it anywhere else since it did not get an official release.
Moderatto did release a video for the original track, and I used this to make a video for the Soulwax remix. Looking back at the video, it’s very DIY, but I didn’t have a lot of skills editing videos.
The brothers chopped up the original track, and the kick and snare drum are very prominent. It’s very similar in style compared to other Soulwax remixes at the time, like their remix of ‘Muscle Museum’ by Muse and ‘Round Round’ by Sugababes.
Fifteen years after ‘discovering’ this unreleased gem, no one has come forward with a better quality version. Even the Dewaele brothers lost it many years ago..
