TBT(70): As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt II – the story behind the album cover

Every Thursday I look back to the past

In 2002, 2manydjs released their ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt II‘ mix album featuring an iconic cover, showing a man in a tuxedo with a brown paper bag over his head.

But there was a problem…

Photographer Richard Young, who took the original photo in 1981, hadn’t given permission and threatened to sue them.

So graphic designer Marc Meulemans had a solution.
Stephen Dewaele: “Marc told us to buy Tipp-Ex and cover up everything that could get us into trouble. Using Tipp-Ex was actually a very punk way to do it”.

Eventually, 2manydjs secured permission to use the original artwork for the album’s 20th anniversary.

So who was under the bag?

The man leaving Langan’s Brasserie in London back in 1981 was none other than Sir Elton John!

If you like this post, just have a look at my track-by-track story of the album.
